Chevrolet Awards Hurst, Texas With Refurbished Field

DETROIT – Chevrolet today announced the Hurst Girls Softball League (HGSL) in Hurst, Texas, has been selected as the first recipient of the 2012 Diamonds & Dreams program. The league will receive a refurbished youth ball field at Chisholm Park, designed and renovated by Ripken Design and FIELDS, Inc.

Chisholm Park was chosen by Arthur Aguilera of Hurst, this year’s first winner of Chevrolet’s Diamonds & Dreams promotion.

“I coach my daughter’s softball team and we play at Chisholm Park. It was in desperate need of a makeover. I’m thrilled that I was chosen and can give my girls and the community a field they can be proud off,” said Aguilera.

Hurst, Texas is the first of 12 communities selected to receive a refurbished playing field as part of Chevrolet’s Diamonds & Dreams program. One winner is chosen each week through July 22; Aguilera will also be eligible to win the Grand Prize: an all-new, 2013 Chevrolet Malibu ECO.  In its third year, Diamonds & Dreams has awarded more than 25 youth field makeovers across the country.

“Every young person wants and deserves a ‘dream’ baseball diamond, and we offer them a chance to get one,” said Phil Caruso, Chevrolet national promotions manager. “From the back yards to the big leagues, Chevrolet is committed to community and youth baseball and giving back to where our customers live, work and play.”

Renovations of the 12 field makeovers will be administered through Ripken Design, a division of Ripken Baseball, owned and operated by National Baseball Hall of Famer Cal Ripken, Jr. and 12-year Major League Baseball veteran Bill Ripken.

“I have been working with Chevy for about two decades and it is a relationship I value a great deal, said Cal Ripken. “Together we are positively impacting kids through baseball at the grassroots level and giving them safe places to play. It is a very gratifying part of what we do, and I appreciate Chevrolet making us a part of this terrific effort.”

The Official Lawn Care Company of Major League Baseball™, Scotts, will continue to partner with Chevrolet and lend its support to multiple field refurbishments. “Scotts believes that it is important to offer youth a safe, reliable field and playing area. In addition to helping reduce injuries, a strong foundation of thick and lush grass helps to create a beautiful outdoor environment that encourages children to spend time outdoors,” said Chris Strunk, Scotts manager, sports marketing and sponsorship.

As the Official Vehicle of Major League Baseball™, Chevrolet also supports the Chevrolet Youth Baseball (CYB) program, which has helped raise more than $13 million to aid local teams during the past seven years. More than 3 million young people in communities across the country have benefitted. More than 1,600 Chevrolet dealers are participating this year.

Malibu Ranks Highest in J.D. Power Initial Quality Study

DETROIT – Chevrolet passenger cars are winning over consumers with their quality – the Malibu was the highest-performing midsize car in the 2012 J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality StudySM

The Silverado HD, Avalanche and Tahoe were also among the top 3 in their respective segments and the Chevrolet brand turned in its best-ever performance in the study with an overall improvement of 8 percent.

“To have the Malibu recognized by our customers as segment leading in J.D. Power’s Initial Quality Study means a lot to us as their satisfaction is a top priority,” said Chris Perry, vice president of Chevrolet Marketing. “We will continue to listen and learn from our customers so we can improve quality even faster on all cars and trucks that wear the Chevrolet bowtie.”

The 2012 IQS is based on responses from more than 74,000 purchasers and lessees of new 2012 model year vehicles surveyed at 90 days of ownership.  The study includes a 228-question survey designed to provide manufacturers with information they can use to quickly identify problems and drive improvement.

Chevrolet’s commitment to quality and steady introduction of new, fuel-efficient products with the technology and features that more customers want helped the brand achieve record first quarter 2012 global sales of 1.18 million vehicles. In the last two calendar years, Chevrolet has grown faster than other high-volume global brands.

2013 Chevrolet Volt Boosts EV Range to 38 Miles

DETROIT – The all-electric vehicle range of the 2013 Chevrolet Volt will be 38 miles on a single charge, providing owners with a three-mile EV range increase from the 2012 model. The miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) will increase from 94 miles to 98 miles and the total range, including extended range operation, will be 380 miles.

Based on real-world experience by Volt owners since the vehicle launched in late 2010, engineers made minor changes to the material composition of the battery cell chemistry, resulting in improved performance and durability. Manganese spinel chemistry remains the foundation for the Volt’s battery system, but the amount of each material has been slightly modified to provide better life performance.

“The best way to explain what we’ve done at the cell level is to compare it to a cake batter recipe.  Sometimes if you use more sugar and less vanilla you get a better tasting cake. We’ve done some work at the cell level to modify the ‘ingredients’ to make a better end result,” said Bill Wallace, GM director of Global Battery Systems Engineering. “This attention to detail will allow our customers to experience more pure EV range, which is the true benefit of owning a Volt.”

In addition, the total storage capacity of the Volt battery has been increased from 16 kWh of energy to 16.5 kWh, and engineers have expanded the state-of-charge window to use 10.8 kWh of the total battery energy – up from 10.3 kWh used in the 2012 model.  The battery system maintains a buffer to ensure battery life, but that buffer has been reduced.

The improved EV range capability will result in slight increases to the Volt’s charge times. A full recharge using a 120V could take 10.5 hours and 4.25 hours using a 240V charging unit.

Cells with improved chemistry have accumulated 150,000 test miles to date. The tests have revealed less battery degradation, the ability to withstand temperatures as low as -30 degrees Celsius and less impact by energy throughput.

For the first 38 miles, the Volt can drive gas and tailpipe-emissions free using a full charge of electricity stored in its 16.5-kWh lithium-ion battery. When the Volt’s battery runs low, a gas-powered engine/generator seamlessly operates to extend the driving range another 344 miles on a full tank. Volt owners have travelled more than 65 million miles since the vehicle launched late 2010. Roughly two-thirds of those miles were powered by grid electricity.

CHEVY INDYCAR AT MILWAUKEE: Chevrolet IndyCar V-6 Advance

DETROIT – June 13, 2012 – The June 16 Milwaukee IndyFest presented by XYQ will mark the debut of the Chevrolet IndyCar V-6 twin turbo direct injected engine on the historic Milwaukee Mile, a track that has long been a favorite for competitors and fans alike.

It has been a successful start to the 2012 inaugural season for the purpose-built Chevy IndyCar V-6, with four wins in seven races, and leading both the manufacturers’ and the driver’s point standings since the conclusion of race one.

The Milwaukee Mile is the third oval on this season’s IZOD IndyCar Series schedule, but differs dramatically from both the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Texas Motor Speedway. Teams will work with the short oval aerodynamic package for the one-mile, flat Milwaukee track. The approved package is closely aligned with the road/street course platform. The lone mandatory element is the addition of front brake duct backing plates..

“Our Chevrolet IndyCar V-6 teams worked on their setups during a quick test session at Milwaukee that was squeezed in between the Indianapolis 500 and the Detroit Grand Prix,” said Chris Berube, Chevrolet Racing Program Manager, IZOD IndyCar Series.  “With Milwaukee being virtually flat, getting the handling dialed in is key to a win.  This is a pivotal race in the tight IZOD IndyCar Series championship battle.”

Three of the current Chevrolet IndyCar V-6 drivers competing this weekend in the Milwaukee IndyFest have previously won at the Milwaukee Mile. Andretti Autosport’s Ryan Hunter-Reay took a trip to Victory Lane in 2004.  Tony Kanaan, KV Racing Technology, has two wins at Milwaukee – 2006 and 2007.  Ryan Briscoe from Team Penske was the 2008 winner.

Chevrolet competed previously in Indy-style competition as an engine manufacturer in 1986-93 and 2002-05 with V-8 engines, winning 105 races, powering six driver champions, and scoring seven Indianapolis 500 victories. Five of those victories came at Milwaukee.

For the fans, the Chevy Racing display will provide the opportunity to get up-close to many vehicles from the full Chevrolet line-up. Also on display will be a variety of parts and accessories from Chevrolet Performance Chevrolet owners can get from their local Chevy dealer. Crate engines will be on display, and interactive games will entertain fans of all ages.  Several of the Chevrolet IndyCar stars will make appearances at the Display throughout the race weekend. Fans should visit the Display for the driver line-up and times. The display will be open Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The 225-lap Milwaukee IndyFest Presented by XYQ is scheduled to start on Saturday, June 16, 2012 at Noon CT (1:00 p.m. ET) with live television coverage on ABC TV.

Live radio coverage will be on XM Radio Channel 94 and Sirius Satellite Radio Channel 212. In addition, IndyCar live timing and scoring with the radio broadcast can be found at www.indy.car.com.

FAST FACTS

MILWAUKEE INDYFEST PRESENTED BY XYQ

THE MILWAUKEE MILE

JUNE 15-16, 2012

JAMES HINCHCLIFFE, NO. 27 TEAM GODADDY.COM ANDRETTI AUTOSPORT CHEVROLET – 3RD IN POINTS: “The general oval package from Texas to Milwaukee is quite different (a superspeedway wing is run at Texas while a road course wing is used on the short ovals like The Mile in order to create more downforce) but we have been quick on superspeedways and quick on road and street courses so there's no reason to think the Go Daddy boys won't put together a fast car for this weekend's race. Milwaukee was one of my best oval races last year, and a real turning point in my season so I'm really looking forward to getting back. It's great to see it back on the schedule and I'd like to see it stick around, so hopefully we'll put on a great show for the Father's Day crowd."

HELIO CASTRONEVES, NO. 3 PENSKE TRUCK RENTAL TEAM PENSKE CHEVROLET – 4TH POINTS: “Milwaukee is a place that has always been special for me and hopefully this year we will be able to put together a great race in the No.3 Penske Truck Rental machine. I have been looking forward to this race since the test we had there earlier in the season and hopefully we will all be able to leave with big smiles on our faces.”

RYAN HUNTER-REAY, NO. 28 TEAM DHL/SUN DROP CITRUS SODA ANDRETTI AUTOSPORTS – 7TH IN POINTS: "Milwaukee is my favorite oval outside of Indianapolis, and it's definitely one of my favorite races of the season. It has such a rich history, but the track itself is so respected by all of the drivers because it's so difficult to get right. That's what makes it one of my biggest wins. Andretti Autosport has always had good cars here, and I want to continue the streak of success they've had at Milwaukee. It's the first short oval race for the (Dallara) DW12, and I really want to win again here. It has the feel of another home race for me since Andretti (Sports Marketing) has taken over the promotion of the event."

RYAN BRISCOE, NO. 2 HITACHI TEAM PENSKE CHEVROLET – 8TH IN POINTS: “I’m always excited to go back to Milwaukee; it’s like a home race for me, my home away from home. I always have a lot of support and family there. We are working on taking our success at ovals and turning it into a win with the No.2 Hitachi Team Penske car this weekend.”

TONY KANAAN, NO. 11 GEICO/MOUSER ELECTRONICS KV RACING TECHNOLOGY CHEVROLET – 9TH IN POINTS

JR HILDEBRAND, NO. 4 NATIONAL GUARD PANTHER RACING CHEVROLET – 12TH IN POINTS: "We're excited to get back to the Milwaukee Mile with the National Guard Chevy boys. We tested there a week ago and picked up a lot of stuff that should help us this weekend. It's another track where the team has done well in the past, so that gives us a lot of confidence going into this weekend, especially coming off a Top Five finish last weekend in Texas."

ORIOL SERVIA, NO. 22 PANTHER/DREYER & REINBOLD RACING CHEVROLET – 13TH IN POINTS: "I like Milwaukee a lot. I've always had good races there and, luckily for us, we were able to do a test day and learn a little be bit about the car on short ovals. We finished the test a lot happier than what we started and I think that we have some direction. It's always a great race for the fans and the drivers, and I can't wait to go there again and bring the Charter car to the front."

RUBENS BARRICHELLO, NO. 8 BMC/EMBRASE KV RACING TECHNOLOGY CHEVROLET – 16TH IN POINTS

E.J. VISO, NO. 5 CITGO/PDVSA KV RACING TECHNOLOGY CHEVROLET – 17TH IN POINTS: "Milwaukee is one of the most fun tracks.  It requires more action inside the cockpit as it's a flat oval and everything happens really fast.  I am really looking forward to the race, having tested here a few weeks ago I believe we are going to be in a good place and I am excited to be going there this weekend."

MARCO ANDRETTI, NO. 26 TEAM RC COLA ANDRETTI AUTOSPORT CHEVROLET – 18TH IN POINTS: "Milwaukee is a driver's track because you don't have support from banking like we do at a lot of the other ovals. It is a tougher track to get things right and it puts the emphasis on everyone (on the team) because if we get the setup right, it is a really rewarding place. It is almost like a video game - if you get it right, you're driving around people. If you get it wrong, it's not fun. Milwaukee is the track where I got my first pole, so it feels good when you get things right. I'm glad that my dad was able to make something happen (with Milwaukee IndyFest). He of all people should be the one promoting it. It doesn't feel like the proper IndyCar Series without Milwaukee.  I think he had five wins there and eight between the whole family, so we'll just look to keep adding to that. We're definitely happy that it's back."

ED CARPENTER, NO. 20 FUZZY’S PREMIUM ULTRA VODKA ED CARPENTER RACING CHEVROLET – 22ND IN POINTS:  “It is funny at Milwaukee because qualifying and racing are so completely different.  I think that is why the drivers like it so much.  In qualifying, you can be close to flat out on the throttle.  It is tough to do that but it is fun when you can.  And, in the race, it’s so much on and off the throttle.  You can get racy there and you’ll see cars go forward or backwards on a fuel stint.  I think you saw that on Saturday night in Texas.  The setup is so tricky at Milwaukee.  With the flatter racing surface, the traction can be very tough.  If you have a good race car, you can go to the front.  But if not, you are just hanging on until you can make changes to the car at the next fuel stop.  Passing can be easy if your race car is good at Milwaukee.  So, it’s fun if you are hooked up, but horrible if the car’s sliding too much.”

GM may use diesels in light-duty pickups

General Motors is considering a diesel engine for light-duty versions of its redesigned full-sized pickups.

GM North America President Mark Reuss said in an interview that a diesel is among the options for the next-generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, which are due in showrooms next spring.

Chrysler Group recently said it is considering a diesel for its light-duty Ram. Ford Motor Co. has no plans for a light-duty diesel, a spokesman said, adding that Ford's EcoBoost V6 engine is a less expensive option to save fuel and will be "our diesel fighter."

Speculation abounds that GM, smarting from Ford's success with the EcoBoost V6 on its F-series pickups, will counter with a turbocharged V6 on the redesigned trucks. But Reuss implied GM will go a different route.

"I wouldn't say that's a huge priority," Reuss said. "I think there are other answers to that--which they don't have--for us that make a lot more sense."

He was referring to GM's two-pronged strategy of offering a mid-sized pickup, the next-generation Chevrolet Colorado, alongside the Silverado and Sierra. Ford phased out its compact Ranger pickup last year and will stick with the F-series as its only pickup line.

Reuss believes the full-sized pickup can't be all things to all customers. Fuel economy often isn't a top priority for construction workers or ranchers who rely on their pickups for a living, he figures.

By offering a mid-sized Colorado, Reuss says, GM will have its shot at fuel-conscious buyers "and still keep that Silverado and Sierra as workhorses."

Weather Simulators Prepare Chevy Cruze for Storm Season

DETROIT – How many gallons of water could your car withstand? How about 6,600 gallons? At Chevrolet, engineers channel Mother Nature to help ensure the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze can withstand the elements – from heat to hurricanes – through high-tech weather testing simulators.

The Cruze is tested for a range of summer weather and road conditions, including the exclusive Universal Water Test Booth at the General Motors Milford Proving Ground. Designed to keep the car water tight, the test subjects the Cruze to a lifetime of water exposure – 6,600 gallons – in just eight minutes. Using 330 nozzles, 825 gallons of water are sprayed onto the car each minute. The intensity of the test exposes weaknesses in the car’s seals, which experts can resolve to help ensure drivers and passengers stay dry in a rainstorm.

The Cruze is also tested in GM’s Climatic Wind Tunnel, which replicates hurricane-force winds. Cars also are driven through up to one foot of water in the Flooded Road Lab to help eliminate water leaks into the engine compartment or doors. The Thermal Chamber tests the car for conditions ranging from arctic cold to desert heat  and the Dust Booth exposes the car to an extreme number of dust particles to help keep it air tight.

“We go above and beyond Mother Nature to ensure our vehicles can withstand the elements,” said Kevin Dunn, GM global vehicle development owner – splash contaminants. “This type of creative testing helps ensure our vehicles can better withstand rain, snow, wind, dust and other day-to-day contaminants.”

Through these tests, GM experts bring further quality, durability and safety to consumers.

Beyond this analysis, the Cruze is equipped with numerous safety features, including the StabiliTrak® Electronic Stability Control System with Traction Control.  On slippery surfaces, StabiliTrak helps drivers stay the course by detecting the difference between the path being steered and the direction the vehicle is actually traveling. It then uses the brakes and, if necessary, adjusts engine torque to help keep the Cruze on track.

The Cruze was the first car in its class with 10 standard airbags, and even today, no car in its class offers more. These include frontal, side-impact and knee air bags for the driver and front passenger, Cruze also has a high-strength safety cage and roof crush resistance that exceeds current federal requirements.

Chevrolet Cruze Eco, Sonic Named Best Family Cars

DETROIT – Edmunds.com and Parents magazine say the Chevrolet Cruze Eco and Sonic are two of the Best Family Cars for 2012.  Both the Cruze Eco and Sonic deliver fuel economy of 40 mpg or more on the highway and offer consumers the comfort, safety and advanced technology they expect at a value.

“With every new Chevrolet, we are able to deliver the technology and powertrain solutions that offer consumers the best fuel economy, performance and safety, making vehicles like the Sonic and Cruze Eco ideal choices for families,” said Chris Perry, vice president, Chevrolet Global Marketing.

“The Cruze Eco and Sonic are the best small Chevys ever built,” said Scott Oldham, Edmunds.com editor-in-chief.  “They are fun to drive, attractive, well-built and extremely fuel efficient, making them excellent choices for anyone shopping for a compact of subcompact car.”

Said Dana Points Parents editor-in-chief: “At Parents, we know that buying a new car is a big family decision, so we want our guide to make the process easier. The Cruze Eco and the Sonic scored high safety marks, and parents using the vehicles were impressed with the responsiveness and the family friendly features.”

The Cruze – Chevrolet’s best-selling car around the world – provides the amenities, quietness, safety features, infotainment and roominess expected of a larger, more expensive sedan, but with the efficiency of a compact car. The first car in its class with 10 standard air bags, the Cruze received an overall five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the highest score possible. The Cruze is available in LS, LT and LTZ trim levels, as well as the Eco model that achieves an EPA-estimated 42 mpg highway.

Cruze Eco achieves its hybrid-like highway fuel economy using a 1.4L Ecotec turbocharged engine, six-speed manual transmission and features that improve its aerodynamics, minimize weight and reduce rolling resistance.

Sonic is proving to be a popular choice among consumers with sales steadily rising to place it among the leaders in the subcompact segment.  It delivers an EPA-estimated 40 mpg highway with class-leading acceleration when paired with the 1.4L Turbo and six-speed manual transmission. The Sonic is offered in two body styles: a four-door sedan and a five-door hatchback. Each is designed to deliver outstanding rear-seat roominess and cargo space.

Sonic, the only subcompact built in the United States, is produced at the General Motors Orion Assembly Center in Michigan, which received a $545-million investment in upgrades and retooling and helped restore approximately 1,000 jobs in the Detroit area.
